Section 1 - Complete! (for the most part)

Last week I finished up my restoration/repair work on Section 1 of Windsong, the aft most portion of the boat as described here: http://www.thequestforwindandwaves.com/?p=281 It was an incredibly exciting week because the first coats of new paint were put on the boat.  Though it was just in the cockpit lockers; seeing a freshly painted, clean, uniform color surface is completely new to me and Windsong.  After the second coat of paint was applied, I stared at it for quite a while with a stupid grin on my face...giddy even.  I cannot imagine how awesome it will be once the decks are painted, but that can wait.

The checklist for this section looks like this now (more thorough than the previous post):

Deck: -Remove all deck hardware - COMPLETE -Pot thru-deck holes with epoxy - COMPLETE -Thoroughly clean with soap, then solvent – COMPLETE -Sand with 150 grit – COMPLETE -Grind/bevel all dings and imperfections (including deck joint) – COMPLETE -Apply epoxy thickened with microballoons to fair – COMPLETE -Sand fairing compound down to a smooth surface – COMPLETE -Re-Apply fairing compound and sand down as needed – COMPLETE

Now the decks are ready to be primed and painted.  I will wait to paint when the temperatures drop in the fall.

Hull sides & Transom: -Remove all hardware, thru-hulls & equipment - COMPLETE -Thoroughly clean with soap, solvent, then On/Off where needed – COMPLETE -Remove above waterline thru-hulls & clean old sealant – COMPLETE -Remove painted name and location - COMPLETE -Wet sand gelcoat with 600 grit – COMPLETE -Sand cove stripe with 220 grit – COMPLETE -Repair any dings in gelcoat (including filled in thru-hull holes) - COMPLETE

I have a little bit of touch up work for the gelcoat repairs, but it is done for the most part.  I still haven't decided if I will leave the transom as is or paint it.  Regardless, that decision can wait until the decks will be painted.

Cockpit Lockers: -Remove all hardware, wiring, plumbing, etc. - COMPLETE -Pressure wash all surfaces - COMPLETE -Repair delaminated locker “floor” - COMPLETE -Glass in unused thru-hull – COMPLETE -Rough sand all surfaces - COMPLETE -Clean sanded surfaces with solvent - COMPLETE -Paint with BilgeKote - COMPLETE

Very excited to have a section completely repaired, and mostly restored.  Here are a few pictures of the painted lockers - before & after.   I know I keep reposting some of these, but who cares...
